Is sodium hydroxide (lye) necessary for soap making?
Yes. To make soap, one of the necessary ingredients is lye. However, you can choose from our range of soap bases for melting and moulding which already contain sodium hydroxide (lye).
How to prepare wooden wicks for use?
Making candles using wooden wicks is really easy as they do not require any additional processing. Simply shorten the wick to the desired size before attaching it, insert it into the wick holder and glue it into the prepared jar.
Why does my wick burn unevenly?
Don’t be disheartened if the first candle produced has small flaws. A seemingly simple process of trial and error teaches us the craft, where candle making eventually becomes a pleasurable process.
If you find that the wick is producing too much flame or the wax surface is melting too quickly, choose a smaller wick size. Conversely, if you find that the flame is smouldering and there is no heat, it is worth trying a wider wick. Always do trial tests with different wick sizes to check that the candle burns evenly, matches the shape of your candle and the size of the container. We suggest you choose sets of wicks in different sizes to find your favourite wick.
