Application in soap making (cold process): Sodium hydroxide can be dangerous if used without following safety instructions. Be sure to read the safety instructions before handling sodium hydroxide. Wear long-sleeved protective clothing, gloves and goggles. Mix lye (sodium hydroxide) with distilled water or other liquid in the proportions specified in the soap recipes. Slowly pour the lye into the liquid and stir gently, repeating until all the lye has been poured into the liquid. Never add liquid to lye. Once the lye has dissolved and cooled, you can mix it with the oils.
